About Us

The Examination Journal began in May of 2020 with an email exchange with a priest friend. I wanted to build a better habit of praying a nightly examen (examination of conscience) and I asked for any advice or resources he could share.

We found plenty of articles talking about an examen. But, I was looking for more than just a how-to or another resource -- I needed a tool.

After going back and forth, I settled on the need for something short (I've got four kids), structured (I'm easily distracted), and accessible (I'm not a Mystic).

My friend's next reply simply said:

"I'm betting that there isn't something pre-made for this specific purpose... So... I'm thinking that YOU'LL have to create something!"

After about 4 years of labor, the fruit of this is the Examination Journal.

And while I "created" the Examination Journal -- I really didn't. Many saints and doctors of the Church like St. Francis De Sales, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Ignatius of Loyola, have taught and written about this kind of prayer. The Examination Journal simply curates their wisdom and combines it with a method of journaling.

I share this story, not to talk about myself. It's not about me. It's actually not about you either, no offense.

It's about the Lord.

We are each on a journey with Him and to Him. The Examination Journal is quite simply a tool for that journey. The Lord will use it as He wills. Our job is to show up and open up. He'll do the rest.

I'm so excited for this next part of your journey.

May God bless,

Mark Quaranta
